For years, blockchain security has relied on one assumption: modern cryptography is practically unbreakable.

Quantum computing is not just another technological upgrade. It introduces a fundamentally different way of processing information, one that could break the very cryptographic systems securing wallets, transaction

This is no longer a theoretical discussion. It has become a timing problem.

The question is no longer whether quantum computers will become powerful enough, the question is now when? 

Traditional computers process information in bits: 0 or 1.

Quantum computers operate using qubits, which can exist in multiple states at once through superposition. Combined with entanglement, this allows quantum machines to explore many possibilities simultaneously instead of sequentially.

This difference becomes critical when dealing with cryptography.

Algorithms like RSA and elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), which secure blockchains today, rely on problems that are extremely hard for classical computers to solve. Quantum computers, using algorithms like Shor’s Algorithm, can solve these problems exponentially faster.

For instance, ECC can generate a public key from a private key but cannot reverse it (with classical computers) but quantum computers can use something like Shor’s Algorithm, a strong quantum machine to take your public key, compute your private key, Gain full control of your wallet.

The Risk Quantum Computing Poses to Blockchains

Blockchain wallets rely on private keys derived from public key cryptography.

Once a transaction is signed, the public key becomes visible onchain. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could:

. Derive the private key from the public key

This means any wallet that has ever transacted becomes a potential target.

2. “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” Attacks

Attackers don’t need quantum computers today to start exploiting them.

. Decrypt it later when quantum capabilities arrive

For long-term assets, this is already a live risk.

. Smart contract authorizations could be compromised

. Infrastructure like MPC and HSM systems could weaken

Even privacy systems such as zero-knowledge proofs may face pressure under quantum assumptions.

Transitioning to post-quantum cryptography is not a quick upgrade, it requires changes across:

Post-quantum signatures: significantly larger

This increases storage, bandwidth, and validation costs.

Waiting too long compresses the migration window and increases systemic risk.

Most existing chains were built without post-quantum considerations. This creates three major issues:

Upgrading live systems is harder than designing secure ones from scratch

Millions of wallets must migrate before Q-Day

Offchain systems may remain vulnerable even if onchain upgrades occur
