How a $2,000 payment actually works today vs on Arc 💡

Most people think a bank transfer is one action. It's not. Here's what really happens.

"Please credit $2,000 to this account." That's SWIFT. It's not money moving. It's an instruction.

STEP 2. The receiving bank reads the message.

If there's a typo, the payment gets stuck. Banks email each other until the ledgers match.

Your $2,000 is still in your bank's reserve account. The other bank has made a note that they owe the freelancer. A promise. Not a transfer.

End of day, the central bank updates its ledger. THIS is when money actually moves.

Your bank talks to an intermediary. The intermediary talks to the freelancer's bank. Each hop takes a cut. 3 banks. 3 ledgers. All need to reconcile. That's why wires take 3 to 5 days and cost 3 to 4%.

You're not paying for a payment. You're paying for a broken game of telephone between 6 institutions.
