Will Quantum Computers Break the Blockchains?

We are standing at the edge of a computational revolution. In 2026, the conversation has shifted from if quantum machines will arrive to when and what they will do.

As these machines grow more powerful, a specific anxiety has gripped the digital world: will quantum computers break the blockchain?

Before talking about all that, let's go back to how quantum was introduced to us.

Quantum computing didn't appear out of nowhere. The threat to blockchain was written into the math three decades before Bitcoin existed. And like most technologies that end up reshaping the world, it began as a curiosity in a physicist's notebook.

In the 1980s, Richard Feynman argued that if nature is quantum, we need a quantum computer to simulate it. But in 1994, mathematician Peter Shor proved that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could factor large prime numbers almost instantly. That math protects every bank account, email, and crypto wallet today. Suddenly, the security assumptions underpinning the entire digital economy had a theoretical expiration date.

We are currently in the NISQ Era in Quantum Computing

Today, we are in the NISQ Era (Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum). We have functional quantum computers, but they are "noisy" and prone to errors. That said, the pace of progress in just the last 18 months has been startling.

In December 2024, Google unveiled its Willow chip, the first quantum processor to demonstrate something cryptographers had chased for nearly thirty years: exponential error reduction as the system scales. Add more qubits and, instead of accumulating errors, the chip's error rate drops by half. In October 2025, Google followed up with Quantum Echoes, the first verifiable quantum advantage on hardware, a workload running roughly 13,000 times faster on Willow than on the world's fastest supercomputers.

The story stopped being about more qubits and became about better qubits.

By 2030, the first truly fault-tolerant quantum computers are expected to arrive. They will start solving real problems in chemistry, drug discovery, and logistics. And somewhere in the mid-2030s, possibly earlier, experts believe quantum computers will reach what's known as the "Cryptographic Break Point": the moment they become powerful enough to break the encryption.

Here is the part many people miss. The threat to blockchain isn't about transaction speed. It's about the identity of ownership itself.

Most blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, secure your wallet using Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). Your public address is mathematically derived from your private key. On a classical computer, working backward from the address to the key would take trillions of years. A quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could, in principle, do it in minutes.

In other words: your public address could one day be enough to drain your wallet.

For a sense of scale, we could say cryptographers used to talk about "Q-Day" the day quantum machines crack public-key encryption, as a problem for the late 2030s. Many now talk about it as a problem for the early 2030s.

In May 2025, Google researcher Craig Gidney showed that breaking RSA-2048 might require roughly 1 million qubits, a 20-fold reduction from his 2019 estimate. In March 2026, a whitepaper co-authored by Google Quantum AI, the Ethereum Foundation, and Stanford demonstrated that the elliptic curve cryptography securing Bitcoin and Ethereum could, in theory, be broken with fewer than 500,000 physical qubits in minutes. Each paper compressed the timeline. None of it means tomorrow but it does mean the comfortable buffer of "twenty years from now" is no longer something to count on.

Every Address Is Under Threat: Harvest Now, Decrypt Later 

Even if Q-Day is still years away, the danger has already begun.

Sophisticated attackers, including state-level actors, are quietly harvesting encrypted data today with no expectation of cracking it now. They are storing it, waiting for the quantum machines of the 2030s to read it for them.

But we already have Post-Quantum Cryptography

The good news is that we already have the math to stop this.

Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) is built on mathematical problems so structurally difficult that even a quantum computer can't find a shortcut through them. Instead of relying on the discrete-log or factoring problems Shor's algorithm tears apart, PQC uses problems like lattice geometry (imagine finding the shortest path through an n-dimensional grid of points) and hash trees (chains of one-way functions that can't be reversed).

In August 2024, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalized the first three post-quantum standards. The flagship signature standard is FIPS 204 / ML-DSA, derived from the CRYSTALS-Dilithium algorithm.

Basically, ML-DSA does the same job as ECC, it lets you sign a transaction in a way that proves you authorized it without revealing your private key. The difference is that ML-DSA's underlying problem (finding short vectors in a high-dimensional lattice) is believed to be hard for both classical and quantum computers. NIST has guided organizations to migrate from RSA and ECC to ML-DSA by 2030, and to treat post-quantum cryptography as mandatory for federal systems by 2035.

What Quantum-Resistance Means for Blockchains

For blockchains, becoming quantum-resistant generally means three things:

, replacing ECC with NIST-approved standards like ML-DSA (Dilithium) or SLH-DSA (the hash-based backup).

, where transactions are signed with both classical and post-quantum signatures so that nothing breaks if either side fails.

, encouraging users to move funds into newly generated, PQ-protected wallets before their old public keys become vulnerable.

The catch is that this migration is enormous. Estimates suggest moving every Bitcoin UTXO into a post-quantum wallet could take months of nonstop network processing. Ethereum is openly designing a multi-year, multi-layer migration covering execution, consensus, and data. And every legacy chain has to coordinate this without breaking the live applications running on top.

This is where the architectural choice of when you build matters enormously.

Arc is being built with the foundations already laid for the quantum era.

Native post-quantum signatures, available from launch

. Arc is not waiting for a crisis to bolt PQ on later. From the moment Arc goes mainnet, users can opt in to post-quantum signature schemes built on NIST-standardized math like ML-DSA (Dilithium). If you want quantum-resistant security on day one, you can have it without forcing the entire ecosystem to migrate at once.

Private states with symmetric encryption.

 To counter the "harvest now, decrypt later" threat, Arc uses symmetric encryption to protect private data inside its virtual machine. Symmetric encryption is naturally far more resistant to quantum attacks than the public-key math Shor's algorithm targets. The worst quantum computers can typically do is halve its effective strength, which is easily compensated for by using larger keys.

 Arc finalizes transactions in roughly half a second. This matters more than it sounds. A core risk for any future quantum attacker is intercepting a transaction while it is still pending and forging a signature before it's locked in. A 500ms finality window collapses that opportunity to almost nothing.

 Cryptography on the blockchain is only half the picture; the off-chain pipes matter just as much. Arc aligns its node-to-node communication with TLS 1.3 standards, the same modern transport-layer security used by the most privacy-conscious systems on the web, and it's already being upgraded industry-wide to support post-quantum key exchange.

 The rollout extends quantum resistance in phases, signatures first, then private state, then off-chain infrastructure, then validator authentication with each phase deliberately spaced to give wallets, custodians, and developers time to adapt.

My Take is Security Is Evolving, Not Ending

It's worth being honest about both the threat and the response. The most important takeaway is the calmest one: there is no need to panic.

The arrival of quantum computing is not a kill switch for the internet or for blockchain. It is a catalyst for an upgrade, the same kind of upgrade that took us from dial-up to fiber-optic, from HTTP to HTTPS, from passwords to multi-factor authentication. Our digital security is simply evolving, on a timeline we still have some control over.

Blockchains are living protocols. They are being patched, upgraded, and reinforced by some of the brightest cryptographic minds in the world. Projects like Arc are leading the charge by proving you don't have to choose between innovation and security. Quantum readiness can be a design choice rather than an emergency response.

By building with a quantum-ready mindset today, Arc is making a simple bet: that the decentralized future deserves to remain private, secure, and permanent, no matter how many qubits the future holds.
