At Arc Studio in Buenos Aires, we sat down with Merlin, Co-Founder of Morpho, to talk about why stablecoins matter, how they are reshaping global finance, and what the next phase of onchain financial infrastructure could look like.

Morpho is building what Merlin describes as a universal lending protocol — a foundation that anyone can build lending products on top of. Today, Morpho has grown to nearly $13 billion in total deposits, reflecting how quickly onchain financial infrastructure is maturing. In the conversation, Merlin put the opportunity around stablecoins simply: they are one of the most important improvements blockchain has brought to the public.

For many users around the world, stablecoins already function like a portable checking account — accessible anywhere with just a wallet and an internet connection. But Merlin’s view is that the next step is even more important: building onchain savings on top of that foundation, so users can not only hold stable value, but also earn without relying on traditional financial infrastructure.

That shift matters most in places where financial systems are under stress. Merlin pointed to conversations with fintech teams working in markets facing high inflation, where people are looking for better ways to save, earn, and make payments more reliably. In that context, the need for better infrastructure becomes much more real and immediate.

That is part of what makes the Arc and Circle so compelling. The long-term value is not just in creating new products for existing crypto users, but in building the rails that can support more useful, global, and accessible financial experiences.

The conversation also touched on why institutions are increasingly paying attention to DeFi: greater transparency, deeper global liquidity, and fewer intermediaries. But adoption will depend on infrastructure institutions can actually use, along with clearer pathways to onboard them in a way that expands the market rather than just redistributing the same users.
