Upwork made $618 million in fees last year. Fiverr made $333 million. Every dollar of that came from freelancers and clients — for what? Holding money. Sending emails. Running a database. That's the entire value proposition of a centralized freelance platform.

I kept thinking: what if you could replace all of that with code?

That question led me to Arc Network, and specifically to ERC-8183 — a native standard for on-chain job lifecycles. When I read the spec, it clicked immediately. The primitive I needed already existed. I just had to build around it.

FreelanceArc is a full-stack web application with a Next.js frontend, Supabase database, and a smart contract backend on Arc Testnet. The entire job lifecycle — from posting to payment — runs on-chain via ERC-8183.

This is the core of the project. Every job on FreelanceArc follows a four-step on-chain lifecycle defined by ERC-8183.

When a client fills out the form and hits "Post Job & Lock USDC," four transactions fire on Arc Testnet in sequence:

From this moment, the client cannot touch the funds. The smart contract holds them. Every transaction is visible on ArcScan with a real hash.

Freelancers browse open jobs, click on a listing, and see the live blockchain status — job created, USDC locked. They hit "Apply for this job," enter their wallet address and a cover letter.

When the work is done, the freelancer hits "Submit Deliverable." 

 is called on Arc Testnet. A keccak256 hash of the deliverable is recorded on-chain permanently — an immutable, timestamped proof of delivery.

The client reviews the work and hits "Approve & Pay." 

 fires. USDC transfers automatically to the freelancer's wallet. The job disappears from listings. Done.

No withdrawal request. No 14-day hold. No dispute process. The contract executes and the money moves.

I evaluated several chains before starting. Arc won for three specific reasons.

This is the main reason. ERC-8183 is Arc's native standard for on-chain job lifecycles. The 

 structure is baked into the protocol — I didn't have to design an escrow system from scratch. The primitive already existed. This alone saved days of development time.

On most chains, you need a volatile native token to pay gas fees. On Arc, gas is paid in USDC. For a payment application, this matters enormously. Transaction costs are stable, predictable, and denominated in dollars.

Arc is built by Circle, and the wallet infrastructure reflects that. I managed all wallets through Circle's API — no private key handling, no seed phrase management, enterprise-grade security out of the box.

Total platform fee per transaction: approximately 

On a $500 job, Upwork takes $100. FreelanceArc takes six cents.

The Agent Demo — Where It Gets Interesting

Halfway through the build, I started thinking about what happens when the workers aren't human.

AI agents are already managing tasks, writing code, and analyzing data. The next step is agents managing budgets — hiring specialist agents, paying for services, running entire workflows autonomously. For that to work, they need a trustless payment layer that doesn't require human intervention.

That's exactly what ERC-8183 was designed for.
