A few weeks ago I wrote a guide for setting up an Arc

Today I will walk you through setting up a 

. Public node is a different thing: instead of running a small copy on your own computer, you connect to Arc's actual test network and follow the real activity in real time.

This setup was harder than the local node setup. You need a serious server, you will deal with large snapshot files, and you will run into a few errors during the process. I ran into many errors myself but managed to fix all of them. In this article I will share what I think will be useful for you.

Before moving on, let me clarify something. 

Local Node and Public Node are different.

A local testnet is running a small copy of Arc on your own computer. It is closed off from the internet and nobody outside can see it. Inside it there are 5 validators (nodes that confirm blocks), 1 full node (a node that holds the whole chain) and a block explorer (a panel where you view transactions). All of them run on your computer. You use it for testing, bug hunting and experimenting.

. You download all the chain data from other nodes on the network, so you can see and follow everything happening on the chain. You cannot become a validator because producing blocks requires approval from the Arc team. But you get your own RPC endpoint. An RPC endpoint is like a door that lets a dApp or another application talk to the Arc network. So when you set up a public node, you can connect your dApps to your own server instead of someone else's.

A public node needs much more powerful hardware, at least 64GB RAM and 1TB SSD. If this is your first time setting up a node, I recommend starting with a local node. That is what I did. I pasted the local node setup guide link above.

64 GB RAM is the minimum. If you set up a node with 64 GB RAM, after a while when the node gets tired, the RAM may start to run out. In that case you need to enable a feature called backpressure. Backpressure works like this: when the node is overloaded, it slows down and says "I cannot keep up", so instead of the RAM blowing up, things stay under control. If you do not want to deal with all that, I would say go with a server that has 128 GB RAM. That is what I did.

New servers come with a setup fee on top of the monthly rent. So I got a server from Hetzner's Server Auction section. There is no setup fee there and the monthly rent is more reasonable.

You can find a similar server by going to the Hetzner Server Auction page and filtering by NVMe SSD, 64+ GB RAM and 1+ TB disk.

After you order the server, Hetzner will send you an email with the IP address and root password. When the server boots up, you land in the Rescue System. Rescue System is a temporary Linux environment that Hetzner gives you. From here you can install any operating system on the server. We will set up Ubuntu.

SSH is a tool that lets you connect to another computer through the terminal. The server is somewhere far away but you can write and run commands on it as if it were your own computer.

Open PowerShell on Windows or Terminal on Mac. Replace 

The first time you connect, it asks a host key question. Type 

 and press Enter. Then it asks for a password. Copy the password from the email and paste it with the right click of your mouse. The password will not show on the screen, that is normal. Press Enter after pasting.

After you enter your password and IP address, you are connected to the Rescue System. Once connected, run this command to start the Ubuntu setup:

A blue menu will open. Pick Ubuntu, then pick 

. After that a notice screen will pop up. This screen is just telling you "I am about to open the configuration file, you can edit the settings there". Press OK and move on.

After you press OK, the configuration editor opens. The configuration is a file that holds the settings for how Ubuntu will be installed. You will see disk partition settings and the hostname. You do not need to touch the disk partition settings. We will only change the hostname.

Save with F10. When it warns about deleting disk data, say 

 and you will be back in the terminal. Run this command to restart the server:

After you run reboot the server will restart and your connection will drop. Wait 3-5 minutes and try to connect again with SSH. This time you will get a warning because Ubuntu is now installed on the server and your computer sees it as a new server. Run this command to clear the old record (replace 

The packages that come with a fresh Ubuntu are usually a bit outdated. We need to keep the system up to date for both security and stability. Run this command:

It takes a few minutes. During this update the Ubuntu kernel usually gets updated as well. The kernel is the lowest layer of the operating system, the bridge between hardware and software. After the kernel is updated, you need to reboot once more for it to take effect:

Wait 3-5 minutes and connect again with this command (do not forget to replace 

It will ask for the password. Paste it like before and press Enter.

Arc node is written in a programming language called Rust. So before we can run Arc node on our server, we need to set up Rust and a few helper tools.

After running the command, you will see a question. Type 

 and press Enter to pick the default option. After the setup is done, run this command to activate Rust:

Besides Rust, Arc node also needs a few helper tools to be built. Run this command to set them all up at once:

apt install -y build-essential pkg-config libssl-dev clang cmake protobuf-compiler git
