This was India's first-ever regional chapter discussion under Arc House - and the energy made it clear people had been waiting for exactly this space.

We had builders from Bangalore, founders from Mumbai, freelancers from Tamil Nadu, students from Kolkata, and community members from across the country pile into breakout rooms and just... go. Four questions, zero holding back. Honest conversations about where stablecoins stand in India right now -- what's working, what's broken, and where the real opportunity lives.

India's Web3 scene is not waiting for permission. Weekly builder meetups, residency programs, hackathon cohorts, student communities - it's already humming. Participants described an ecosystem that's active, collaborative, and growing fast. Policymakers are starting to pay attention. Developers are shipping.

But here's the tension: all of this energy exists in a kind of regulatory limbo. The ecosystem is vibrant inside the crypto-native bubble. Outside it? Most people are still watching from the sidelines - curious, interested, but hesitant. The enthusiasm is real, the caution is equally real.

One participant put it simply: "People stay only if they find real utility." That stuck with me.

When we asked "where are stablecoins actually being used?" - every single room landed in the same place: cross-border payments and freelancer earnings.

This isn't theoretical. Developers getting paid in USDC for remote work. Freelancers avoiding 3-day SWIFT delays and intermediary fees. Startups using stablecoins for global settlements. OTC desks. DeFi. Liquidity provision. It's happening - just not at the consumer layer yet.

What stablecoins are not doing in India right now: buying chai or groceries. UPI owns that. Completely. And honestly, that's fine - stablecoins don't need to compete with UPI on domestic payments. They need to complement it on everything UPI can't reach.

Every room - without exception - named the same #1 blocker: 

It's not that people don't want to use stablecoins. It's that they're afraid to. No clear guidelines. Tax ambiguity. Banking relationships that can vanish overnight. Multiple participants described the fear of P2P bank freezes - you sell crypto, your account gets frozen, and suddenly you're explaining yourself to a bank manager who doesn't know what USDC is.

Coinbase restricted. Major on-ramps limited. Buying USDC in India today is genuinely difficult - and the difficulty breeds scams, which breeds more fear, which keeps people away. It's a cycle.

The UPI comparison cuts both ways here. Yes, UPI proves Indians love digital payments. But it also sets a bar so high - instant, free, frictionless - that any crypto payment experience feels clunky by comparison. For new users, the gap is jarring.

I expected the regulatory conversation. I expected the freelancer use case. What I didn't fully expect was how specific and actionable the opportunity framing would get.

One builder from Tamil Nadu said something that lit up Room 4:

"If Circle creates a direct INR-to-USDC gateway - a trusted, compliant on-ramp, that's the game changer. That single thing unlocks everything else."

And the room agreed. Not "we need better education" or "we need more awareness" - those are true but vague. This was concrete: give India a clean, reliable way to go from INR to USDC, and the rest follows. The demand is already there. The pipes are what's missing.

The consensus opportunity is clear: cross-border payments at scale.

India has the largest freelancer workforce in the world. We have a massive diaspora sending remittances home. We have startups doing global commerce from Day 1. And we have hundreds of millions of people already habituated to instant digital payments through UPI. The behavioral muscle is trained - it just needs new rails.

But the bigger unlock? The one that got me genuinely excited?

USDC tapping into UPI habits. Not replacing UPI. Not competing with it. Extending it. A builder from Kolkata made the point that if stablecoin payments could feel as seamless as a UPI scan - same mental model, same speed, same trust - India's crypto landscape wouldn't just grow. It would leap.

Beyond payments, participants flagged payroll automation, B2B settlements, programmable finance, and even public-sector use cases like blockchain-based land records. India's developer talent was cited repeatedly - we don't just have users, we have the builders who can create the products for the next wave.

What struck me most wasn't any single insight - it was the consistency across five independent rooms. Five groups of strangers, arriving at the same conclusions: India is ready, the talent is here, the demand exists, and the single biggest unlock is a clear regulatory path plus a trusted INR-to-USDC on-ramp.

This wasn't wishful thinking or hype. It was builders and practitioners describing their lived experience. That carries weight.

This was India's first chapter discussion - but it won't be the last.

The conversations that started today are continuing in DMs, in group chats, in the connections people made across rooms. If you're building in this space - whether it's payments, compliance tooling, on-ramps, or anything that makes stablecoins more accessible in India - you're not alone. There's a community forming around this, and it's moving faster than most people realize.
