When we talk about DeFi liquidity, the conversation often starts with how much capital a protocol has attracted. That number matters, but I don't think it tells the whole story.

Imagine a business holding USDC for payroll, supplier payments, and emergency expenses. Some of that capital may be needed today, while another portion might not be needed for weeks.

Treating the entire balance the same way could mean leaving useful capital idle or exposing money that should have remained available.

A more interesting approach would be to let applications classify funds according to their purpose, timing, and risk constraints. Capital reserved for tomorrow's payments could remain accessible, while funds with a longer horizon could be evaluated separately under clearly defined rules.

That doesn't mean automatically sending every idle dollar into a yield strategy. Liquidity, counterparty exposure, withdrawal conditions, and the cost of moving funds all matter.

For me, the opportunity is in building systems that understand why capital is being held before deciding what to do with it.

Could programmable stablecoin applications make liquidity management more responsive to actual financial obligations?
